Augustin Jianu is a prominent Romanian technocrat and entrepreneur, known for his deep knowledge in software development, cybersecurity, and policymaking. In 2017, he served as Romania’s Minister of Communications and Information Society, making significant strides in technology policy, strategy, and regulation. His work particularly focused on cutting-edge areas like cybersecurity, blockchain, AI, IoT, and smart ecosystems.
During his time as Minister, Jianu oversaw the operations of key national entities, including the National Post Company, National Radio Communications Company, and the National Center for Cyber Security Incident Response. He played a crucial role in establishing a strong legal framework for network and information security and successfully reintroduced a vital tax exemption for Romanian software developers. Under his leadership, the National Post Company was recapitalized, securing its financial stability, and the innovative RO-ALERT emergency warning system for citizens was launched.
Beyond his public service, Jianu is a serial entrepreneur, having co-founded several startups in the fields of blockchain, big data, digital identity, digital democracy and artificial intelligence. His expertise in cybersecurity is recognized across Europe due to his leadership of the National Center for Cyber Security Incident Response from 2014 to 2016 and his role in the management board of ENISA (European Union Agency for Network and Information Security).
Adding to his impressive background, Augustin Jianu was also a Senior Research Fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School. There, he dedicated his research to exploring the use of Large Language Models in Policymaking.
