Meet our speaker - Cosmin Onisii
BIO
On September 28th, 2021, the head of mission, Cosmin Onisii, presented to the President of the Republic of Poland, H.E. Andrzej Duda, the letters of accreditation as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania in the Republic of Poland.
Cosmin Onisii is a career diplomat and holds the diplomatic rank of Ambassador.
Prior to his current appointment as Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Poland, Cosmin Onisii served, from November 2019 to June 2021, as State Counsellor for Foreign Policy to the Prime Minister of Romania.
During 2013 – 2019, Cosmin Onisii acted as deputy head of the Romanian Embassy in London, with a spell of about 8 months (November 2015 – June 2016) as Chargé d’affaires a.i..
Between 2007 and 2013, he was successively Deputy Director and Director of the United States and Canada Department in the Romanian Foreign Ministry. In that capacity he contributed to the launching in 2011 of the “Strategic Partnership for the 21st Century” between Romania and the United States of America and subsequently oversaw the early stages of setting up the bilateral Task Force entrusted with its implementation.
Between 2003 and 2007, Cosmin Onisii was posted in New York, with the Permanent Mission of Romania to the United Nations, and was a member of the team representing Romania during the country’s tenure as an elected member of the UN Security Council (2004-2005). He also fulfilled the role of legal adviser of the Permanent Mission of Romania to the U.N. and served as Vice-Chair of the 6th Committee of the U.N. General Assembly, at its 61st session.
Ambassador Onisii joined Romania’s Foreign Service in 2000, as a fresh graduate from the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest. He attended, inter alia, training courses at the Vienna Diplomatic Academy and the Swedish National Defense College.
Born in Brăila, on 5 September 1977, he is married and has three children.
